Taboola vs MGID: Which Native Ad Network to Use in 2026

Taboola and MGID are both native ad networks, but they do different jobs. Taboola has the bigger premium reach (Yahoo, Apple News, NBC News, Samsung phones) and the stricter ad review, so it is where you scale a winning funnel. MGID has cheaper clicks, a $100 minimum deposit and a more flexible policy, so it is where you test angles and run markets like Italy and Brazil. We are an official partner of both and spend on both every week; this comparison is based on what moves CPA in our accounts, not on the platforms' sales decks.

The short answer: when to choose each

    • Choose Taboola if you sell in the US, UK or Western Europe, your funnel already converts somewhere, and you want volume on premium audiences.
    • Choose MGID if you need to find a winning angle on a limited budget, you run affiliate or lead gen offers, or your main markets are Italy, Brazil or other emerging markets.
    • Use both if you can: test on MGID, move the winning angle (in a compliant version) to Taboola, and keep MGID running as extra volume.

    Reach and inventory

Taboola's edge is the quality of its supply. Since 2023 it has run native advertising on Yahoo under an exclusive 30-year deal, and it also serves Apple News, NBC News, USA TODAY and the home screens of Samsung and Xiaomi phones. That means large, mostly Tier 1 audiences that have money to spend.

MGID is broader rather than deeper: more than 32,000 publishers in over 200 countries, with a long tail of smaller sites and strong coverage in markets Taboola treats as secondary. MGID has local teams in Milan, Rome and São Paulo, and in our accounts Italy and Brazil are its strongest markets.

Cost: CPC, minimums and test budget

Both platforms run a CPC auction, so there is no price list: CPC depends on country, device, vertical and competition. As a rule, MGID clicks cost less than Taboola clicks, but a cheaper click that doesn't convert is not cheaper. Always compare the two on CPA and ROAS.

    • Taboola has no fixed minimum deposit. Realize recommends a daily budget of at least 10x your target CPA and 2–3 days of learning before judging a campaign. We test with $100–200 a day per campaign and pause an ad after about $12 spent without a conversion.
    • MGID asks for a $100 minimum deposit and a $50 minimum campaign budget, and itself recommends starting with $650 or more. We also test at $100–200 a day per campaign, pause a teaser after $20–30 without a conversion and exclude a widget once it has spent 1.5x the target CPA without converting.

So the entry ticket is lower on MGID, but a proper test costs about the same on both. To estimate your own numbers, use our native ads budget calculator or read how much native ads cost.

    Bidding and optimization

The logic is similar on both platforms; the names change.

    • Launch on automated "max conversions" bidding. On Taboola that is Maximize Conversions, on MGID it is MaxConversions. Both use your target as a direction, not a cap, while they learn.
    • Switch to a hard CPA target only with stable data. On Taboola we move to Target CPA after about 50 conversions in 7 days. On MGID, CPA Tune stops spending if the target is below your real CPA, so set it close to reality and lower it step by step.
    • Optimize placements, not just ads. On Taboola you block sites with high CTR and low conversion rate; on MGID you manage widgets. Widget-level quality varies more on MGID, so placement management matters even more there.
    • Scale gradually. We raise budgets by 15–20% every two days on both. Big jumps reset learning and often push CPA up.

    Ad policy and approvals

This is the difference most advertisers underestimate. Taboola reviews ads strictly, especially in health: no "cure" claims, no aggressive before-and-after images without disclaimers, no fake urgency, no headlines that imitate real news. Apple News placements are stricter still.

MGID is more flexible, which is why it is a good place to test advertorial angles that Taboola would reject. Flexible doesn't mean anything goes: keep medical claims out, add disclaimers to before-and-after visuals and never imitate a real news outlet. Practical rule: if an angle wins on MGID, build a compliant version before you move it to Taboola, and expect the compliant version to convert differently.

    Traffic quality

Taboola's average audience is more premium, so CPCs are higher but so is the average value of a visitor. MGID says 96% of the traffic it delivers is real and human, and it has run its own fraud prevention system since 2013. In practice the spread is wider on MGID: some widgets convert as well as Taboola, others send clicks that never engage. On lead gen accounts we block any placement, on either platform, with a form-start rate below 5%.

How we use Taboola and MGID together

    1. Set up tracking once for both. Install the Taboola pixel and the MGID pixel, or send conversions server-to-server from your tracker, including soft events like add to cart or form start.
    2. Test angles on MGID. 10+ teasers per campaign, mobile and desktop separated, images first with the same headline, then headlines on the winning images.
    3. Rebuild the winner for Taboola. Same angle, compliant headline and image, landing page checked against Taboola's policy.
    4. Scale on Taboola with one campaign per device and separate tests for Yahoo-only and no-Yahoo placements.
    5. Keep MGID live as a second source of volume, refreshing creatives every 3–5 days.

The same approach works with Outbrain, which is often stronger on premium European publishers: see Taboola vs Outbrain and our list of the best native advertising platforms.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is MGID cheaper than Taboola?

Clicks usually are, and the minimum deposit is only $100. But what matters is cost per acquisition: compare the two platforms on CPA and ROAS with the same funnel, not on CPC.

    Is Taboola better than MGID?

Not in general. Taboola has more premium reach and is better for scaling in Tier 1 markets; MGID is better for cheap testing, affiliate offers and markets like Italy and Brazil.

Can I run the same ads on Taboola and MGID?

Often, but not always. MGID accepts angles Taboola rejects, so build a compliant version of any MGID winner before launching it on Taboola.

Which one is better for beginners?

MGID has a lower entry ticket, but neither platform forgives a funnel without tracking. If you are new to native, start with one platform, a tracked advertorial and a test budget of at least $100 a day.

Do I need an agency to advertise on Taboola or MGID?

No, both are self-serve. An official partner agency adds platform support, faster reviews and the testing system above. If you prefer to start alone, you can open an MGID advertiser account through our partner link.
