    01 — Context

    The Challenge

Italy has a specific financial product — Cessione del Quinto (CQS/CQP) — a government-regulated salary or pension deduction loan. It's a high-intent, compliance-heavy vertical. The client: a licensed financial intermediary based in Rome, targeting pensioners (INPS) and public employees (NoIPA).

The brief: build a scalable native ads lead generation machine from zero, with no existing campaign data, in a vertical where most traffic is bought on brand keywords via SEO/SEM.

    Key constraints:

    • Target audience: 55–75 age range, low digital sophistication
    • Compliance: no direct financial claims, no APR mentions in ads
    • Tracking: full-funnel via Voluum (click → landing → form → lead CRM)
    • Platform: MGID (selected over Taboola/Outbrain for Italian publisher depth and CPA Tune bidding)

    02 — Methodology

    The Wave-Test System

    1. 01

      Audience & Angle Mapping

Before spending a cent, we mapped 3 audience segments (active pensioners, public employees about to retire, employees needing liquidity) and 6 messaging angles (speed, approval ease, no upfront cost, comparison vs. bank, "you're entitled to it", monthly savings unlock). Each angle became a separate campaign group.

    2. 02

      Wave 1: Image Testing

We launched campaigns with 3–5 image variants per angle, holding headlines constant. Budget: €10–15/day per campaign. Stop rule: pause after €25 spend with no qualified click. This wave identified the top-performing creative categories: "expert/doctor" frame and "everyday person testimonial" outperformed product-only visuals 2.3× on CTR.

    3. 03

      Wave 2: Headline Testing

Top 2 images from Wave 1 carried into headline testing. We tested 10+ headline formulas: geo-DKI, curiosity gap, problem/solution, soft social proof. Winner formula: [City] pensioners are now unlocking up to €50,000 — here's how — driven by local relevance + specificity.

    4. 04

      Wave 3: Scale & Consolidation

Winning image + headline combinations were consolidated into 4 campaigns running on CPA Tune (tCPA) at €15 target. Budget scaling: +15–20% every 48h on performing campaigns. We reached €250/day on the top performer within 3 weeks of Wave 3 launch.

    5. 05

      Ongoing Optimization

Weekly publisher-level analysis via Voluum. Publishers with spend > 1.5× CPA goal and 0 conversions were blocked. Geo-performance reviewed bi-weekly: Southern Italy (Campania, Sicilia, Calabria) outperformed North by 34% on CVR — budget redistributed accordingly.

    05 — Learnings

    5 Key Learnings

    1. 1

      MGID outperforms for Italian finance.

Publisher depth in Italian regional news sites (local newspapers, notizie locali) delivers a 55+ audience that Taboola/Outbrain doesn't reach at scale in this vertical.

    2. 2

Wave testing cuts waste by ~60%.

Compared to launching full-budget campaigns from day one, the wave-test approach reduced wasted spend in the discovery phase and surfaced winners 2× faster.

    3. 3

      Geo matters more than demographics.

Southern Italy converted at 34% higher CVR than the North — not a demographic difference, but a product-market fit difference (lower banking access, higher product relevance).

    4. 4

      CPA Tune requires patience.

The algorithm needs 50+ conversions/week before SmartBid stabilizes. Scaling too early kills learning. We held manual bidding for 3 weeks before switching to tCPA.

    5. 5

Landing page friction is the CPL lever.

Our single biggest CPL drop (from €31 to €20) came not from creative changes but from a form simplification: reducing fields from 7 to 4 on the lead capture page.
